SUNDEEP BHUTORIA

Sundeep Bhutoria is a social activist working for over two and a half decades in the field of welfare, international cultural cooperation and the promotion and preservation of Indian arts.

Social and Cultural Initiatives of, by and for India

Based out of Kolkata, India, he devotes his time to conceptualising and curating, strategising and managing a plethora of social and cultural activities in around 50 cities in India. He has a keen eye and an enduring passion for the fine arts, having worked closely with artists, both celebrated and aspiring, and promoted their work through his various initiatives and organisations.

As the managing trustee of the Prabha Khaitan Foundation, he helps carry out various cultural activities with the aim of preserving and promoting India’s rich cultural heritage. Some of the programmes he has been instrumental in instituting and executing are An Author’s Afternoon, Aakhar, Chaupal, Ek Mulakat, Kalam, Karuna, Lafz, Recipe Rendezvous, Rahat, Tete-a-Tea, The Write Circle and The Universe Writes. These have all made a place for themselves on the social and cultural calendar of India.

As the trustee of the Education For All Trust, he works in the field of social welfare and carries out community outreach programmes for universal literacy. He also started Project `Muskaan’ – an initiative that reaches out to thousands of students across India to popularise heritage literature and culture by engaging them in cultural programmes, story- telling, dance, music, puppetry, theatre and art. Distributing nutritious food and basic hygienic amenities is a part of this project for disadvantaged children. About 200 schools from all over India are aligned with Muskaan’s various initiatives.

He is the Honorary Secretary-General of The Bengal — a Kolkata-based NGO that brings together eminent citizens, thought leaders and achievers to promote various socio-cultural and welfare activities. A flagship outreach programme of The Bengal is Pronam, run in collaboration with Kolkata Police and dedicated to the welfare of elderly citizens. With about 20,000 members, this unique initiative hand-holds our senior citizens when they need it the most.

Similarly, he formed the Rajasthan Forum, a body of distinguished individuals from across the state engaged in different form of arts and performances. They organise programmes like the Desert Soul and Desert Storm, to showcase talent from diverse fields who represent the heritage and the soul of Rajasthan.

During the pandemic, he initiated Lockdown Live, where folk artists perform live virtually and an honorarium is provided to them to help them financially during lockdown. More than 2,000 artists have benefitted from this. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), London. He is also a supporter of #ReWear4Earth – a campaign which focuses on fashion and sustainability, encouraging everyone to ReWear outfits for different occasions and do their part in reducing damage dealt to earth.

He has been advising and also been instrumental in launching a number of CSR projects by various corporates in India. He is serving as a Nominee of the Governor of Rajasthan at Bikaner University. He also serves as a Member of the Expert Committee of Cultural Function and Production Grant of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and as a member of the Advisory Committee of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). He is one of the brand ambassadors for the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC). He has been nominated by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, as a member of the Board of Trustees of Indian Museum, Kolkata. He has been nominated as a member of the Hindi Salahakar Samiti of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. As an Independent Director in Petronet LNG Limited he is also serving as the Chairman of the CSR Committee of the Board. He was the Honorary Secretary of the Kolkata Chapter of the Rajasthan Foundation, an autonomous body instituted by the Government of Rajasthan, for the socio-economic development of Rajasthan by building bridges and bonds with the non-resident Rajasthanis.

Taking India to the World

He represents India in the United Nations Associations, and on various other national and international fora.

He is the Treasurer of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) which at present he has taken a leave of absence.

He was the Secretary of the Youth Taskforce – WFUNA held in New York, and was elected the Treasurer of WFUNA in Canada in 2009. He was the first Indian to be elected to the post, which he was re-elected to in 2012 in Brazil, in 2015 in Vancouver, and in 2018 in the Dominican Republic. He was also appointed Special Advisor to the WFUNA Secretary- General on Youth Affairs in Geneva.

In 2000, he was nominated to the Millennium Commonwealth Parliament at Manchester, UK. In 2001, he participated in the Youth Summit for World Conference against Racism in Durban, South Africa, and attended the UN’s World Conference of NGOs in New York.

In 2003, he visited China as a member of the Indian Delegation on Peace and Goodwill. In 2008, he was one of the judges at the 3rd Asia-Pacific Model United Nations (MUN) Conference in 2008 held at Incheon, South Korea. In 2017, he visited China as Deputy Leader of a delegation, on the invitation of the United Nations Association of China.

His other international engagements include Chair Member at the 8th International Conference of Young Scholars held at the University of Economics, Prague, Czech Republic. In 2009, he was invited to become a member of the Regional Committee for Asia Pacific Region of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations (CoNGO) at its Thailand meet.

He has delivered lectures on India in New York University, Oxford Business College, University of Turin, Politecnico di Torino, Moscow University, Czech Republic University, The City College of New York and Yale University.

The personal

Sundeep Bhutoria was once described by Mother Teresa as “a boy with a different vision altogether”.

Born in a Jain family in Churu, the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, this “boy with a different vision” is passionate about various social causes, ranging from the education of underprivileged children to women’s empowerment to the preservation of Indian folk culture. His writings and his work encompass some of the most pressing local and global issues, like the environment, empowering the disadvantaged, education and skill development, waste management, global peace, wildlife protection and supporting the elderly.

A columnist and blogger, his first book in English, The Safari, centres around wildlife preservation and tiger protection in India, while his first book in Hindi chronicles his experience in different countries, titled Aap Biti Jag Biti. His second book in English, My Life My Travels, a travelogue that touches upon the cultural and social mores in different countries of the world gleaned through his own travel experiences, was a bestseller. His third book in English, China Diary, is a travelogue published by Pan Macmillan in November 2019. Then came Calcuttascape: Musings of a Globetrotter, a collection of his blogs and columns published by Pan Macmillan in July 2020, followed by Bera Bond, on the leopards of Bera in Rajasthan. His latest book titled The Global Desi: Reflections on Home and Away is another compilation of his articles and blogs, published by Pan Macmillan in August 2021. He is currently working on another book on his travels to Norway where he will be sharing his experiences when he was invited to attend the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo in 2019.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Hindi from India, a Diploma in Business Management from UK and a Certificate in Corporate Management from Japan.

Being an animal lover, he has adopted a tiger and housed other animals, including Casper the dog, Kahlua the horse, Ganga the cow and Gaurra the calf.

In his spare time he loves to read, write and watch plays. He plays the violin, is fond of golf and loves attending polo matches.

He lives with his wife Manjari and daughter Aavya, and divides his time among Kolkata, Delhi, Rajasthan and London.

संदीप भूतोड़िया, पिछले ढाई दशक से लोक कल्याण, अंतरराष्ट्रीय सांस्कृतिक सहयोग और भारतीय क
लाओं के प्रोत्साहन और संरक्षण के क्षेत्र में सक्रिय एक प्रतिष्ठित सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता हैं।
सामाजिक व सांस्कृतिक पहल–  भारत की, भारत द्वारा और भारत के लिए
कोलकाता, भारत निवासी भूतोड़िया का अधिकांश समय देश के लगभग 50 शहरों में बहुविध रूप में फैली
सामाजिक–सांस्कृतिक गतिविधियों, उनके आयोजनों, संयोजन की अवधारणा, रणनीतिक विकास और
प्रबंधन को समर्पित है। वे ललित कलाओं की गहरी पारखी दृष्टि और उत्साह से भरपूर हैं और उन्होंने
विभिन्न पहलों और संगठनों के माध्यम से प्रतिष्ठित और नवोदित, दोनों तरह के कलाकारों के साथ
काम किया है, और उनके काम को प्रोत्साहन दिया है।
प्रभा खेतान फाउंडेशन के प्रबंध न्यासी के रूप में वह भारत की समृद्ध सांस्कृतिक विरासत को संरक्षित
और प्रोत्साहित करने के उद्देश्य से विभिन्न सांस्कृतिक गतिविधियों के आयोजन में सहयोग करते हैं।
जिन कार्यक्रमों को आरंभ और क्रियान्वित करने में आपका महत्त्वपूर्ण योगदान रहा है, उनमें ऐन ऑथर्स
आफ्टरनून, आखर, चौपाल, एक मुलाकात, कलम, करुणा, लफ्ज़, रेसिपी रांदेवू, राहत, टेट–अ–टी, द
राइट सर्कल और द यूनिवर्स राइट्स जैसे कार्यक्रम शामिल हैं। ये सभी कार्यक्रमों ने भारत के
सामाजिक–सांस्कृतिक कैलेंडर में अपनी महत्त्वपूर्ण जगह बना ली है।
एजुकेशन फॉर ऑल ट्रस्ट के न्यासी के रूप में आप सामाजिक कल्याण के क्षेत्र से गहराई से जुड़े हैं और
सार्वभौमिक साक्षरता के लिए सामुदायिक आउटरीच कार्यक्रम का संचालन करते हैं।
आपने ‘मुस्कान‘ परियोजना भी शुरू की है– जो पूरे भारत में हजारों छात्र के बीच सांस्कृतिक
कार्यक्रमों, कथावाचन, नृत्य, संगीत, कठपुतली, रंगमंच और अन्य कला गतिविधियों से उन्हें जोड़ते हुए
पारम्परिक साहित्य और संस्कृति को लोकप्रिय बनाने की दिशा में सक्रिय है। वंचित समुदायों के बच्चों
के लिए पौष्टिक भोजन और बुनियादी स्वच्छता सुविधाओं का वितरण इस परियोजना का एक अहम
हिस्सा है। भारत भर में लगभग 200 स्कूल‘मुस्कान‘ की विभिन्न पहलों से जुड़े हुए हैं।
आप कोलकाता के एक गैर–सरकारी संगठन ‘द बंगाल‘ के मानद महासचिव भी हैं, जो विभिन्न
सामाजिक–सांस्कृतिक और कल्याणकारी गतिविधियों को प्रोत्साहित करने के लिए प्रतिष्ठित
नागरिकों, वैचारिक नेतृत्वकर्ताओं और विशिष्ट उपलब्धियों वाले व्यक्तियों को आपस में जोड़ती है।
वयोवृद्ध नागरिकों के कल्याण के प्रति समर्पित ‘द बंगाल‘ का एक प्रमुख लोक सम्पर्क
कार्यक्रम ‘प्रणाम‘ है, जो कोलकाता पुलिस के सहयोग से संचालित होता है। लगभग 20,000 सदस्यों
वाली यह अनूठी पहल वरिष्ठ नागरिकों की उस समय मदद करती है, जब उन्हें इसकी सबसे अधिक
जरूरत होती है।

इसी तरह, आपने राजस्थान फोरम का गठन किया है, जो पूरे राज्य में विभिन्न प्रकार की कलाओं और
प्रदर्शन कौशलों से जुड़े विशिष्ट व्यक्तियों का संगठन है। यह फोरम राजस्थान की आत्मा और विरासत
का प्रतिनिधित्व करने वाले विविध क्षेत्रों की प्रतिभाओं को सामने लाने के लिए डेजर्ट सोल और डेजर्ट
स्टॉर्म जैसे कार्यक्रमों का आयोजन करता है।
महामारी काल में आपने लॉकडाउन लाइव नामक कार्यक्रम की शुरुआत की, जिसमें लोक कलाकारों की
सजीव प्रस्तुतियों को आभासी माध्यम पर प्रसारित कर उन्हें मानदेय प्रदान किया जाता है, ताकि इस
कठिन समय में उनकी आर्थिक मदद की जा सके। इस कार्यक्रम से अब तक 2,000 से अधिक कलाकार
लाभान्वित हो चुके हैं।
आप रॉयल सोसाइटी ऑफ आर्ट्स (आरएसए) लंदन के फेलो भी हैं।
वह #ReWear4Earth के भी हिमायती हैं-
यह एक ऐसा अभियान है जो फैशनऔर टिकाऊपन पर केंद्रित है, जो सभी लोगों को इसके
लिए प्रेरित करता है कि वे एक ही कपड़ों को  बार
बार अलग अलग मौक़ों पर पहनें और इस तरह से पृथ्वी को हो रहेनुक़सान को कम करने म
अपनी भी योगदान करे
आप ने भारत में विभिन्न कॉरपोरेट समूहों के कॉरपोरेट सोशल
रिस्पांसिबिलिटी– सीएसआर– परियोजनाओं के लिए परामर्श देने और उन्हें आरंभ करने में महत्त्वपूर्ण
भूमिका निभाई है। आप बीकानेर विश्वविद्यालय में राजस्थान के राज्यपाल के नामित के रूप में भी
कार्यरत हैं। आप संस्कृति मंत्रालय, भारत सरकार के सांस्कृतिक कार्य और उत्पादन अनुदान की
विशेषज्ञ समिति के सदस्य तथा भारतीय सांस्कृतिक संबंध परिषद(आईसीसीआर) की सलाहकार
समिति के सदस्य के रूप में भी सक्रिय हैं। आप ईस्टर्न जोनल कल्चरल सेंटर (ईजेडसीसी) के ब्रांड
एंबेसडरों में से एक हैं।
आपको संस्कृति मंत्रालय, भारत सरकार द्वारा भारतीय संग्रहालय, कोलकाता के न्यासी बोर्ड के सदस्य
के रूप में भी नामित किया गया है। इसके अतिरिक्त, आपको नागरिक उड्डयन मंत्रालय की हिंदी
सलाहकार समिति के सदस्य के रूप में भी नामित किया गया है। पेट्रोनेट एलएनजी लिमिटेड में एक
स्वतंत्र निदेशक के साथ ही आप बोर्ड की सीएसआर समिति के अध्यक्ष के रूप में भी अपनी सेवायें देते हैं।
आप राजस्थान के सामाजिक–आर्थिक विकास के उद्देश्य से अनिवासी राजस्थानियों के साथ संपर्क
विकसित करने के लिए राजस्थान सरकार द्वारा स्थापित स्वायत्त निकाय राजस्थान फाउंडेशन के
कोलकाता चैप्टर के मानद सचिव भी रह चुके हैं।
दुनिया में भारत का प्रतिनिधित्व

आप वर्ल्ड फेडरेशन ऑफ यूनाइटेड नेशन्स एसोसिएशन्स, और विभिन्न राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंचों
पर भारत का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं।
आप वर्ल्ड फेडरेशन ऑफ यूनाइटेड नेशन्स एसोसिएशन्स (डब्ल्यूएफयूएनए) के कोषाध्यक्ष हैं और
वर्तमान में वहां से अनुपस्थिति की अनुमति ले रखी है।
आप न्यूयॉर्क में आयोजित यूथ टास्क फोर्स– डब्ल्यूएफयूएनए के सचिव रहे हैं, और 2009 में कनाडा में
आपको इस संगठन का कोषाध्यक्ष चुना गया था। आप इस पद के लिए चुने जाने वाले पहले भारतीय
थे, जो2012 में ब्राजील में, 2015 में वैंकूवर में और 2018 में डोमिनिकन गणराज्य में इस पद पर
पुनर्निर्वाचित किए गये। आपको जेनेवा में युवा मामलों पर डब्ल्यूएफयूएनए महासचिव के विशेष
सलाहकार के रूप में भी नियुक्त किया गया था।
सन् 2000 में आप मैनचेस्टर, यूके में मिलेनियम कॉमनवेल्थ पार्लियामेंट के लिए नामित किए गये।
सन् 2001 में आपने दक्षिण अफ्रीका के डरबन में नस्लवाद विरोधी युथ समिट फॉर वर्ल्ड कांफ्रेंस में
हिस्सा लिया और न्यूयॉर्क में संयुक्त राष्ट्र के वर्ल्ड कांफ्रेंस ऑफ एनजीओ में शिरकत की।
सन् 2003 में शांति और सद्भावना के लिए आपने भारतीय प्रतिनिधिमंडल के सदस्य के रूप में चीन का
दौरा किया। सन् 2008 में आप दक्षिण कोरिया के इंचियोन में आयोजित तीसरे एशिया–प्रशांत मॉडल
संयुक्त राष्ट्र (एमयूएन) सम्मेलन के निर्णायक मंडल के एक सदस्य थे। सन् 2017 में, आपने एक
प्रतिनिधिमंडल के उप नेता के रूप में चीन के यूनाइटेड नेशन्स एसोसिएशन के आमंत्रण पर चीन का दौरा
किया।
आपकी अन्य अंतर्राष्ट्रीय भागीदारियों में चेक गणराज्य के प्राग अर्थशास्त्र विश्वविद्यालय में
आयोजित 8वें अंतर्राष्ट्रीय युवा विद्वत सम्मेलन में अध्यक्ष–सदस्य के रूप में उपस्थिति शामिल है।
सन् 2009 में आपको गैर–सरकारी संगठनों के सम्मेलन (कोएनजीओ) की एशिया–प्रशांत क्षेत्र की
थाईलैंड शिखर बैठक में क्षेत्रीय समिति का सदस्य बनने के लिए आमंत्रित किया गया था।
आपने न्यूयॉर्क विश्वविद्यालय, ऑक्सफोर्ड बिजनेस कॉलेज, ट्यूरिन विश्वविद्यालय, पॉलिटेक्निको
डी टोरिनो, मॉस्को विश्वविद्यालय, चेक गणराज्य विश्वविद्यालय, द सिटी कॉलेज ऑफ न्यूयॉर्क और
येल विश्वविद्यालय में भारत पर कई व्याख्यान दिए हैं।
वैयक्तिक
संदीप भूतोड़िया का उल्लेख एक बार मदर टेरेसा ने ‘सर्वथा एक अलग दृष्टि वाला लड़का‘ के रूप में किया
था।
राजस्थान के शेखावाटी इलाके के चूरू में जन्मा यह ‘सर्वथा अलग दृष्टि वाला लड़का‘ विभिन्न
सामाजिक उद्देश्यों– वंचित बच्चों की शिक्षा से महिला सशक्तीकरण, और भारतीय लोक संस्कृति के
संरक्षण तक के प्रति अत्यंत सक्रिय रहता है। उसके लेखन और काम में कुछ अति महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थानीय

और वैश्विक मुद्दे, जैसे पर्यावरण, वंचितों का सशक्तीकरण, शिक्षा और कौशल विकास, अपशिष्ट
प्रबंधन, विश्व शांति, वन्यजीव संरक्षण और वयोवृद्ध लोगों की देखभाल आदि शामिल हैं।
एक स्तंभकार और ब्लॉगर के रूप में आपकी पहली पुस्तक अंग्रेजी में ‘द सफारी‘ भारत में वन्यजीव
संरक्षण और बाघ सुरक्षा पर केंद्रित है, जबकि हिंदी में पहली पुस्तक ‘आप बीती जग बीती‘, विभिन्न देशों
में उनके अनुभवों का वर्णन करती है। अंग्रेजी में आपकी दूसरी पुस्तक ‘माई लाइफ माई ट्रेवल्स‘ एक यात्रा
वृत्तांत है। विभिन्न देशों के सांस्कृतिक और सामाजिक रीति–रिवाजों के बीच स्वयं के यात्रा अनुभवों से
गुंथी हुई यह पुस्तक ‘बेस्टसेलर‘ थी। अंग्रेजी में उनकी तीसरी पुस्तक ‘चाइना डायरी‘ भी यात्रा वृत्तांत
है, जिसे नवंबर 2019 में पैन मैकमिलन ने प्रकाशित किया था। इसके बाद
आई ‘कैलकटास्केप: म्यूज़िंग्स ऑफ़ ए ग्लोबट्रॉटर‘आपकी ब्लॉग पोस्टों और स्तंभों का संग्रह थी। इसे
भी पैन मैकमिलन ने जुलाई 2020 में प्रकाशित किया था। अगली पुस्तक ‘बेरा बॉन्ड‘ थी, जो राजस्थान
के बेरा इलाके में तेंदुओं और मनुष्य के सहजीवन पर केंद्रित थी। पैन मैकमिलन द्वारा अगस्त 2021 में
प्रकाशित उनकी नवीनतम पुस्तक ‘द ग्लोबल देसी: रिफ्लेक्शंस ऑन होम एंड अवे‘ उनके लेखों और
ब्लॉगों का एक और संकलन है। वर्तमान में वे अपनी नॉर्वे यात्रा पर आधारित एक पुस्तक पर काम कर रहे
हैं, जिसमें उन अनुभवों को साझा करेंगे, जो उन्होंने 2019 में ओस्लो में नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार समारोह में
शिरकत के लिए आमंत्रित किए जाने के दौरान हासिल की थी।
आप ने भारत से हिंदी में स्नातकोत्तर, यूके से व्यवसाय प्रबंधन में डिप्लोमा और जापान से कॉरपोरेट
प्रबंधन में सर्टिफिकेट हासिल किया है।
बतौर पशु प्रेमी आपने एक बाघ को गोद लिया है, आपके पास कैस्पर नामक कुत्ता, घोड़ा कहलुआ, गंगा
नामक गाय और गौरा नामक बछड़ा समेत कई अन्य पालतू जानवर हैं।
खाली समय में पढ़ना, लिखना और नाटक देखना आपको पसंद है। वायलिन बजाने के अलावा गोल्फ को
लेकर आपकी दीवानगी और पोलो मैचों में शिरकत करना पसंद है।
पत्नी मंजरी और बेटी आव्या के साथ आप रहते हैं, और कोलकाता, दिल्ली, राजस्थान और लंदन के बीच
अपना समय बिताते हैं।
