About Sundeep Bhutoria

Sundeep Bhutoria is a social and cultural activist who has been working for over two-and-a-half decades in the fields of welfare, international cultural cooperation, and the promotion and preservation of Indian arts.

Social and Cultural Initiatives of, by and for India

Based in Kolkata, India, he devotes his time to conceptualising and curating, strategising and managing a plethora of social and cultural activities in around 60 cities in India and beyond. He has a keen eye and an enduring passion for the fine arts, having worked closely with both celebrated and aspiring artists, promoting their work through his various initiatives and organisations.

As the managing trustee of the Prabha Khaitan Foundation, he helps carry out various cultural activities with the aim of preserving and promoting India’s rich cultural heritage. Some of the programmes he has been instrumental in instituting and executing are An Author’s Afternoon, Aakhar, Chaupal, Ek Mulakat, Kalam, Kitaab, Lafz, Tete-a-Tea, The Write Circle and The Universe Writes. These have all secured a place on the social and cultural calendar of India.

As a trustee of the Education For All Trust, he works in the field of social welfare and carries out community outreach programmes for universal literacy. He also started Project Muskaan – an initiative that reaches thousands of students across India to popularise literary and cultural heritage by engaging them in cultural programmes, storytelling, dance, music, puppetry, theatre and art. Distributing nutritious food and basic hygiene products is a part of this project for disadvantaged children. Over 100 schools from across India are involved with Muskaan’s various initiatives.

He is also the Honorary Secretary-General of The Bengal, a Kolkata-based NGO that brings together eminent citizens and thought leaders to promote various socio- cultural and welfare activities. Its flagship outreach programme Pronam, in collaboration with Kolkata Police, is dedicated to the welfare of elderly citizens. With 20,000-plus members, this unique initiative supports senior citizens when they need it the most.

He formed the Rajasthan Forum, a body of distinguished individuals from across the state engaged in different forms of arts and performances. They organise programmes like Desert Soul and Desert Storm to showcase talent from diverse fields representing the heritage and soul of Rajasthan.

During the pandemic, he initiated Lockdown Live, where folk artists performed live online, and an honorarium was provided to help them financially. More than 2,000 artists benefited from this.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), London, a member of the Royal Overseas League (ROSL), London, the India International Centre (IIC), the India Habitat Centre (IHC) and the Rajasthan International Centre (RIC).

He is also a supporter of #ReWear4Earth with Ricky Kej, a three-time Grammy award winner. This campaign focuses on fashion and sustainability, encouraging everyone to rewear outfits for different occasions and do their bit for reducing damage to the earth.

He has been instrumental in launching and guiding a number of corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects by various organisations in India. He is serving as a Nominee of the Governor of Rajasthan at Bikaner University. He is also a Member of the Expert Committee of the Cultural Function and Production Grant of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. He is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and a brand ambassador for the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC).

He has been nominated by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Indian Museum, Kolkata. He has also been nominated as a member of the Hindi Salahkar Samiti of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

He is an independent director of Petronet LNG Ltd., which has a turnover of about INR 533 billion (around USD 6.23 billion) and a net worth of about INR 169 billion (around USD 1.97 billion). He is also Chairman of the CSR Committee of the company.

He serves as an independent director of Shree Capital Services Ltd, which has a net worth of about INR 21.32 billion (around USD 249 million), and NBI Industrial Finance Company Ltd, which has a net worth of about INR 23.36 billion (around USD 273 million).

He was the Honorary Secretary of the Kolkata Chapter of the Rajasthan Foundation, an autonomous body instituted by the Government of Rajasthan for the socio- economic development of the state by building bridges and bonds with non-resident Rajasthanis.

Taking India to the World

Mr Bhutoria has represented India in the United Nations Associations and various other national and international forums.

He served as the Treasurer of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), Geneva.

He was the Secretary of the Youth Taskforce – WFUNA held in New York and was elected the Treasurer of WFUNA in Canada in 2009. He was the first Indian to be elected to the post, and he was re-elected in 2012 in Brazil, in 2015 in Vancouver, and in 2018 in the Dominican Republic. He was also appointed Special Advisor to the WFUNA Secretary-General on Youth Affairs in Geneva.

In 2000, he was nominated to the Millennium Commonwealth Parliament in Manchester, UK. In 2001, he participated in the Youth Summit for the World Conference against Racism in Durban, South Africa, and attended the UN’s World Conference of NGOs in New York.

In 2003, he visited China as a member of the Indian delegation on Peace and Goodwill. In 2008, he was one of the judges at the third Asia-Pacific Model United Nations (MUN) Conference in Incheon, South Korea. In 2017, he visited China as deputy leader of delegation, on the invitation of the United Nations Association of China.

His other international engagements include serving as Chair Member at the Eighth International Conference of Young Scholars held at the University of Economics, Prague, Czech Republic. In 2009, he was invited to become a member of the Regional Committee for the Asia Pacific Region of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations (CoNGO) at its Thailand meet.

He has delivered lectures on India at New York University, Oxford Business College, University of Turin, Politecnico di Torino, Moscow University, Czech Republic University, The City College of New York, Columbia University and Yale University.

In 2024, he served as Associate Producer on Grammy-winner Ricky Kej’s monumental rendition of the Indian National Anthem, which entered the Guinness World Records as the “Largest Singing Lesson,” featuring a 14,000-strong choir of tribal children.  He was also one of the Executive Producers on Ricky Kej’s album Break of Dawn, which earned a Grammy nomination in 2025 for Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album.

The Personal

Born into a Jain family in Churu, the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, Sundeep Bhutoria was once described by Mother Teresa as “a boy with a different vision altogether”.

An avid chronicler, his writings encompass some of the most critical local and global issues, like the environment, empowering the disadvantaged, education and skill development, waste management, global peace, wildlife protection and supporting the elderly.

A regular columnist and blogger, his first book in English, The Safari, centres around wildlife preservation and tiger protection in India, while his first book in Hindi chronicles his experience in different countries, titled Aap Biti Jag Biti. His second book in English, My Life My Travels, a travelogue that touches upon the cultural and social mores in different countries gleaned through his own experiences, was a bestseller. His third book in English, China Diary, is a travelogue published by Pan Macmillan in November 2019. Then came Calcuttascape: Musings of a Globetrotter, a collection of his blogs and columns published by Pan Macmillan in July 2020.

This was followed by Bera Bond, on the leopards of Bera in Rajasthan, which has received critical acclaim from various quarters. The Global Desi: Reflections on Home and Away is another compilation of his articles and blogs, published by Pan Macmillan in August 2021. Norway Diary, published by Prabhat Prakashan in May 2024, is about his trip to Norway where he attended the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo in 2019. His latest publication, Ranthambore Diary, explores the captivating stories of nine tiger cubs in Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan. He is also ready with a new book titled Treasure Trove: An Ethnographic Notebook on Asia’s Oldest Museum, which serves as a comprehensive yet accessible guide to the Indian Museum in Kolkata — the ninth oldest museum in the world and the largest in Asia.

He holds a master’s degree in Hindi from India, a diploma in Business Management from the UK, and a certificate in Corporate Management from Japan.

Being an animal lover, he has adopted a tiger and housed other animals, including Casper the dog, Kahlua the horse, Ganga the cow, and Gaurra the calf.

In his spare time, he loves to read, write and watch theatre. He plays the violin, is fond of golf, and loves attending polo matches.

Sundeep Bhutoria, a truly global citizen, lives in Kolkata with his wife Manjari and daughter Aavya.

प्रभा खेतान फाउंडेशन के प्रबंध न्यासी के रूप में भूतोड़िया भारत की समृद्ध सांस्कृतिक विरासत को संरक्षित और प्रोत्साहित करने के उद्देश्य से विभिन्न सांस्कृतिक गतिविधियों के संचालन में सहयोग करते हैं। जिन कार्यक्रमों को आरंभ और क्रियान्वित करने में उन्होंने महत्त्वपूर्ण योगदान दिया है, उनमें एन ऑथर्स आफ़्टरनून, आखर, चौपाल, एक मुलाक़ात, कलम, किताब, लफ़्ज़, टेट-अ-टी, द राइट सर्कल और द यूनिवर्स राइट्स शामिल हैं। इन सभी ने भारत के सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक कैलेंडर में अपना महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थान बना लिया है।

एजुकेशन फॉर ऑल ट्रस्ट के न्यासी के रूप में वे सामाजिक कल्याण के क्षेत्र से गहराई से जुड़े हैं और सार्वभौमिक साक्षरता के लिए सामुदायिक आउटरीच कार्यक्रम संचालित करते हैं। उन्होंने ‘प्रोजेक्ट मुस्कान’ के रूप में एक ऐसी पहल की शुरुआत की, जो पूरे भारत में हज़ारों छात्रों को सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रमों, कथावाचन, नृत्य, संगीत, कठपुतली, रंगमंच और अन्य कला गतिविधियों से जोड़कर उनके बीच सांस्कृतिक और साहित्यिक विरासत को लोकप्रिय बनाती है। वंचित बच्चों के लिए पौष्टिक भोजन और बुनियादी स्वच्छता उत्पादों का वितरण इस परियोजना का एक अहम हिस्सा है। भारत भर में 100 से अधिक स्कूल ‘मुस्कान’ की विभिन्न पहल से जुड़े हुए हैं।

भूतोड़िया कोलकाता के एक गैर-सरकारी संगठन ‘द बंगाल’ के मानद महासचिव भी हैं, जो विभिन्न सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक और कल्याणकारी गतिविधियों को प्रोत्साहित करने के लिए प्रतिष्ठित नागरिकों और विचारकों को एकजुट करता है। बुज़ुर्ग    नागरिकों के कल्याण के लिए समर्पित इसका एक प्रमुख लोक सम्पर्क कार्यक्रम ‘प्रणाम’ है, जो कोलकाता पुलिस के सहयोग से संचालित होता है। लगभग 20,000 सदस्यों वाली यह अनूठी पहल वरिष्ठ नागरिकों की उस समय मदद करती है, जब उन्हें इसकी सबसे अधिक आवश्यकता होती है।

उन्होंने राजस्थान फोरम का गठन किया, जो विभिन्न प्रकार की कलाओं और प्रदर्शन कौशलों से जुड़े राज्य भर के विशिष्ट व्यक्तियों का संगठन है। यह फोरम राजस्थान की आत्मा और विरासत का प्रतिनिधित्व करने वाली विविध क्षेत्रों की प्रतिभाओं को सामने लाने के लिए ‘डेजर्ट सोल’ और ‘डेजर्ट स्टॉर्म’ जैसे कार्यक्रम आयोजित करता है।
कोरोनावायरस महामारी काल में उन्होंने लॉकडाउन लाइव की शुरुआत की, जिसमें लोक कलाकारों ने आभासी माध्यम पर सजीव प्रस्तुतियाँ दीं और उन्हें मानदेय प्रदान कर उनकी आर्थिक सहायता की गयी। इससे 2,000 से अधिक कलाकारों को फ़ायदा हुआ।

वे रॉयल सोसाइटी ऑफ़ आर्ट्स (आरएसए) लंदन के फेलो, रॉयल ओवरसीज लीग (आरओएसएल) लंदन, इंडिया इंटरनेशनल सेंटर (आईआईसी), इंडिया हैबिटेट सेंटर (आईएचसी) और राजस्थान इंटरनेशनल सेंटर (आरआईसी) के सदस्य हैं।

भूतोड़िया तीन बार के ग्रैमी पुरस्कार विजेता रिकी केज के साथ #ReWear4Earth के भी समर्थक हैं। यह अभियान फैशन और वहनीयता पर एकाग्र है, जो सभी को अलग-अलग अवसरों पर दोबारा पोशाकें पहनने और इस तरह पृथ्वी को हो रहे नुकसान को कुछ कम करने में अपना योगदान देने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करता है।

भारत के विभिन्न संगठनों द्वारा कॉर्पोरेट सोशल रिस्पांसिबिलिटी (सीएसआर) परियोजनाओं को शुरू करने और संचालित करने में उन्होंने महत्त्वपूर्ण सलाहकार की भूमिका निभाई है। वे बीकानेर विश्वविद्यालय में राजस्थान के राज्यपाल के नामित के रूप में भी कार्यरत हैं। वे भारत सरकार के संस्कृति मंत्रालय के सांस्कृतिक समारोह और उत्पादन अनुदान की विशेषज्ञ समिति के सदस्य भी हैं। वे भारतीय सांस्कृतिक संबंध परिषद (आईसीसीआर) की सलाहकार समिति के सदस्य और पूर्वी क्षेत्रीय सांस्कृतिक केंद्र (ईजेडसीसी) के ब्रांड एंबेसडर हैं।

भूतोड़िया को भारत सरकार के संस्कृति मंत्रालय द्वारा भारतीय संग्रहालय, कोलकाता के न्यासी बोर्ड के सदस्य के रूप में नामित किया गया है। इसके अतिरिक्त वे नागरिक उड्डयन मंत्रालय की हिंदी सलाहकार समिति के सदस्य के रूप में भी नामित हैं।

भूतोड़िया ने यूनाइटेड नेशन्स एसोसिएशन्स और विभिन्न राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंचों पर भारत का प्रतिनिधित्व किया है।
उन्होंने वर्ल्ड फेडरेशन ऑफ यूनाइटेड नेशन्स एसोसिएशन्स (डब्ल्यूएफयूएनए), जेनेवा के कोषाध्यक्ष के रूप में भी कार्य किया है।

वे न्यूयॉर्क में आयोजित यूथ टास्क फोर्स- डब्ल्यूएफयूएनए के सचिव रह चुके हैं और 2009 में कनाडा में उन्हें इस संगठन का कोषाध्यक्ष चुना गया था। इस पद के लिए चुने जाने वाले वे पहले भारतीय थे, जो 2012 में ब्राज़ील में, 2015 में वैंकूवर, कनाडा में और 2018 में डोमिनिकन गणराज्य में पुनर्निर्वाचित हुए। उन्हें जेनेवा में युवा मामलों पर डब्ल्यूएफयूएनए महासचिव का विशेष सलाहकार भी नियुक्त किया गया था।

सन् 2000 में भूतोड़िया मैनचेस्टर, यूके में मिलेनियम कॉमनवेल्थ पार्लियामेंट के लिए नामित किए गये। 2001 में उन्होंने दक्षिण अफ़्रीका के डरबन में नस्लवाद विरोधी यूथ समिट फॉर वर्ल्ड कांफ्रेंस में हिस्सा लिया और न्यूयॉर्क में संयुक्त राष्ट्र के वर्ल्ड कांफ्रेंस ऑफ़ एनजीओ में शामिल हुए।

सन् 2003 में शांति और सद्भावना पर भारतीय प्रतिनिधिमंडल के सदस्य के रूप में उन्होंने चीन का दौरा किया। सन् 2008 में वे दक्षिण कोरिया के इंचियोन में आयोजित तीसरे एशिया-पैसेफिक मॉडल यूनाइटेड नेशंस (एमयूएन) कॉंफ्रेंस के निर्णायक मंडल के एक सदस्य थे। सन् 2017 में, उन्होंने चीन के यूनाइटेड नेशन्स एसोसिएशन ऑफ़ चाइना के आमंत्रण पर प्रतिनिधिमंडल के उप नेता के रूप में चीन का दौरा किया।

भूतोड़िया की अन्य अंतरराष्ट्रीय भागीदारियों में चेक गणराज्य के प्राग अर्थशास्त्र विश्वविद्यालय में आयोजित 8वें अंतरराष्ट्रीय युवा विद्वत सम्मेलन में अध्यक्ष-सदस्य के रूप में उपस्थिति शामिल है। सन् 2009 में उन्हें गैर-सरकारी संगठनों के सम्मेलन ‘कांफ्रेंस ऑन नान गवर्नमेंटल आर्गनाइजेशन’ (CONGO) की एशिया-प्रशांत क्षेत्र की थाईलैंड शिखर बैठक में क्षेत्रीय समिति का सदस्य बनने के लिए आमंत्रित किया गया था।

उन्होंने न्यूयॉर्क विश्वविद्यालय, ऑक्सफ़ोर्ड बिज़नेस कॉलेज, ट्यूरिन विश्वविद्यालय, पॉलिटेक्निको डी टोरिनो, मॉस्को विश्वविद्यालय, चेक रिपब्लिक विश्वविद्यालय, द सिटी कॉलेज ऑफ़ न्यूयॉर्क, कोलंबिया विश्वविद्यालय और येल विश्वविद्यालय में भारत पर व्याख्यान दिए हैं।

सन् 2024 में उन्होंने ग्रैमी विजेता रिकी केज की भारतीय राष्ट्रगान की स्मारकीय प्रस्तुति के एसोसिएट प्रोड्यूसर की भूमिका निभाई, जिसे गिनीज वर्ल्ड रिकॉर्ड्स में ‘सबसे बड़े गायन पाठ’ के रूप में दर्ज किया गया, जिसमें 14,000 आदिवासी बच्चों की सशक्त गायक-मंडली ने हिस्सा लिया। वे रिकी केज के एल्बम ‘ब्रेक ऑफ़ डॉन’ के कार्यकारी निर्माताओं में से एक थे, जिसने 2025 में ‘बेस्ट न्यू एज, एम्बिएंट या चैंट एल्बम’ के लिए ग्रैमी नामांकन अर्जित किया।

वैयक्तिक

राजस्थान के शेखावाटी क्षेत्र के चुरू के एक जैन परिवार में पैदा हुए संदीप भूतोड़िया को एक बार मदर टेरेसा ने ‘एक सर्वथा अलग दृष्टि वाला लड़का’ के रूप में निरूपित किया था।
वे एक उत्साही इतिहासकार हैं, जिनके लेखन में पर्यावरण, वंचितों का सशक्तीकरण, शिक्षा और कौशल विकास, अपशिष्ट प्रबंधन, विश्व शांति, वन्यजीव संरक्षण और वयोवृद्ध लोगों की देखभाल जैसे कुछ अति महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थानीय और वैश्विक मुद्दे शामिल हैं।

एक नियमित स्तंभकार और ब्लॉगर के रूप में उनकी पहली पुस्तक अंग्रेज़ी में ‘द सफारी’, भारत में वन्यजीव संरक्षण और बाघ सुरक्षा पर केंद्रित है, जबकि हिंदी में पहली पुस्तक ‘आप बीती जग बीती’, विभिन्न देशों में उनके अनुभवों का वर्णन करती है। अंग्रेज़ी में उनकी दूसरी पुस्तक ‘माई लाइफ़ माई ट्रेवल्स’ एक यात्रा वृत्तांत है। विभिन्न देशों की यात्रा के दौरान वहाँ के सांस्कृतिक और सामाजिक रीति-रिवाजों के अनुभवों से ओतप्रोत यह पुस्तक ‘बेस्टसेलर’ रही। नवंबर 2019 में पैन मैकमिलन द्वारा अंग्रेज़ी में प्रकाशित उनकी तीसरी पुस्तक ‘चाइना डायरी’ भी यात्रा वृत्तांत है। पैन मैकमिलन द्वारा ही जुलाई 2020 में प्रकाशित ‘कैलकटास्केप: म्यूज़िंग्स ऑफ़ ए ग्लोबट्रॉटर’ उनके ब्लॉग और स्तंभों का संग्रह है।

उनकी अगली पुस्तक ‘बेरा बॉन्ड’ राजस्थान के बेरा इलाके में तेंदुओं और मनुष्य के सहजीवन पर केंद्रित थी, जिसे विभिन्न क्षेत्रों से भरपूर प्रशंसा मिली। पैन मैकमिलन द्वारा अगस्त 2021 में प्रकाशित पुस्तक ‘द ग्लोबल देसी: रिफ्लेक्शंस ऑन होम एंड अवे’ भी उनके लेखों और ब्लॉगों का एक और संकलन है। मई 2024 में प्रभात प्रकाशन द्वारा प्रकाशित ‘नॉर्वे डायरी’, नॉर्वे यात्रा पर आधारित है, जब उन्होंने 2019 में ओस्लो में नोबेल शांति पुरस्कार समारोह में भाग लिया था।

‘रणथंभौर डायरी’ नामक पुस्तक, राजस्थान के रणथंभौर राष्ट्रीय उद्यान के नौ बाघ शावकों की मनोरम कहानियों को उजागर करती है। उनकी नवीनतम पुस्तक ‘ट्रेजर ट्रोव: एन एथ्नोग्राफ़िक नोटबुक ऑन एशियाज़ ओल्डेस्ट म्यूज़ियम’ है, जो कोलकाता में भारतीय संग्रहालय के लिए एक व्यापक लेकिन सुलभ मार्गदर्शिका के रूप में कार्य करती है- जो दुनिया का नौवां सबसे पुराना और एशिया का सबसे बड़ा संग्रहालय है। उन्होंने भारत से हिंदी में स्नातकोत्तर, यूके से व्यवसाय प्रबंधन में डिप्लोमा और जापान से कॉर्पोरेट प्रबंधन में सर्टिफ़िकेट हासिल किया है।

बतौर पशु प्रेमी उन्होंने एक बाघ को गोद लिया है और कैस्पर नामक कुत्ता, कलुआ नामक घोड़ा , गंगा नामक गाय और गौरा नामक बछड़ा समेत कई अन्य कई जानवरों को पाल रखा है। खाली समय में पढ़ना, लिखना और नाटक देखना उन्हें पसंद है। वायलिन बजाने के अलावा गोल्फ़ को लेकर उनमें दीवानगी है और पोलो मैचों में शिरकत करना पसंद है।
