A proud moment for The Bengal
Tuesday, July 17 2012: Yesterday was very hectic. There was The Bengal board meeting at The Taj Bengal at 5 pm.
The Bengal is a Kolkata-based NGO which has prominent opinion makers and leaders from various segments of the society as members. They were all there yesterday at the Hotel to attend the board meeting.
Just before the meeting, the Chairman of The Bengal, Hari Mohan Bangur, felicitated Prof Dr Md Mansoor Alam – one of the board members. Prof Dr Alam, a leading scholar of Persian language in India, was recently conferred a Certificate of Honour by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt Pratibha Devsingh Patil, at a grand investiture at the Rashtrapati Bhawan for his long years of service in promoting and popularising Persian language and literarure in the country.
Arindam Sil, one of the committee members and a talented actor himself, mentioned that another board member of The Bengal, Roopa Ganguly, had received the national award for best playback singing. It was a proud moment for all the members.
The Bengal, President, Sunil Gangopadhyay, Working President, Nabaneeta Dev Sen, Dolly Basu, Dona Ganguly, Jogen Chowdhury, Agnimitra Paul and other members were all present.
Prior to the meeting, the members enjoyed jhal moori, cha (tea) in traditional glasses with singaras (samosas).
The highlight of the day’s meeting was the induction of tabla maestro Bickram Ghosh as a new board member. He was welcomed at the meeting with a flower bouquet by President Sunil Gangopadhyay.
The Bengal runs various cultural and outreach projects, including a project for the senior citizens called Pronam in collaboration with Kolkata police.
The Board also discussed at length the forthcoming annual function of Pronam on August 4, 2012, where The Bengal board member, Dona Ganguly, would perform Chitrangada for the senior citizens.
In the meeting it was decided that The Bengal will collaborate with The Telegraph for supporting the project `Safe City’.
After The Bengal board meeting I hosted a Story Reading Session of Aparna Sen’s new film Goynar Baksho, produced by Shree Venkatesh Films, at The Taj Bengal at 7:30 pm followed by cocktails & dinner. Many Tollywood celebrities and the cast and crew of the film were present alongside other prominent personalities of Kolkata. To night I shall fly out to Singapore.
