A walk after a win

Nov 9, 2012: This morning I was officially declared Treasurer of WFUNA at the beginning of the plenary. It was a nice feeling to be congratulated by the delegates from so many countries.  After the morning plenary session and lunch I went for a long walk to the beaches.

First I started from just few steps from the hotel to a beach called Saosconra which is one of thequietest beaches.

Not much activity happens and there are some kiosks on the sides where you can have beer, snacks and coconut water.

Many of these kiosks (picture) also have live music evenings. From there I went to the famous Ipanema beach which is busier and lots of tourists visit this spot. An finally I went to the Copacabana beach which was full of tourists from almost every country in Europe and American continent. Copacabana is the most happening of all the beaches in Rio and across the road the promenade is lined up with many 5 star hotels. This area is also the commercial hub of the city.

Besides kiosks, I found apart from kiosks after short intervals I spotted boys and girls playing football, basketball or volley ball  (picture). All the three games are very popular here and much of it is played in and around the beaches.

One thing that I noticed was that adjacent to the beach front next to the road there were provisions for people to do work outs and calisthenics, something I have not seen anywhere else in the world during my long years of travel.

Most of these are busy during the evening (picture).

It is amazing to see the number of tourists in this city, and why not, after all how many cities in the world has so many churches, lakes, beaches, islands, mountains, waterfalls and even a forest cover stretching over 20 kms long and 4-km wide in the middle of city.

The Rio offers 40 major cultural centres, literary societies, art galleries, a number of theatres and movie halls in every corner. It is really impossible to define this city which was the capital of this country till 1958. The city is now even more famous for its media and journalism courses and the presence of multinational oil companies.
